 Good lens but it has it's limitations. September 9, 2010

For the price this lens is a great buy and it works great with my Nikon D5000. I love it and will be keeping it until I upgrade cameras, which is a long time away.
Here are a few observations that I noted about the Lens:
1. It's heavier than expected, most 70-300mmm lenses are heavy but this one seems to weigh more than a comparable lens.
2. The autofocus is loud, noticably loud. Might not be a problem for you but i use it for shooting wildlife and don't want to spook my subjects.
3.No vibration reduction. You gotta pay more for that. If you're not using a tripod then you better have a steady hand.
4. No lock on the lens, the zoom will creep out when you point the lens down.
The macro is great but again you need tripod.

D5000 compatible! i say again D5000 compatible! built-in auto-focus motor works flawlessly... it's made in japan by the way so you can bet on that! the pictures are sharp even if it doesn't have vibration reduction mechanism. i advice a tripod if you dont have adequate light though..

Great lens for the price. Bought it to take wildlife photos with my Nikon D5000. The pictures are as sharp as the ones with my nikon lens. No antivibration but a great lens.

Got the lens by looking at the great reviews. I have playing around with this one for around a month now. The pictures are good as long the light is great. The moment you take it in slightly low light, the images will have blur because camera shake will come into play as shutter speed goes down. Yes because it does not have VR or IS (image stablization). And I am not talking about dark or near darkness. Even indoors the pictures won't be sharp unless you use a tripod and fire your shots with a remote or timer. I usually take my pictures during the day so I am happy to have a higher zoom and macro capability. Also I have learnt to use tripod almost all the time. But again this is a bargain price for this kind of equipment. Sigma has given us a good option at a dirt cheap price.

I was skeptical at first because of the low price, but I am very pleasantly surprised by what a decent lens this is. It's sharp, has good range, and even in low light, still does well on my Pentax K200D.
I've noticed difficulty focusing at its maximum focal distance. I haven't had a chance to play around with it to see what's going on. Also note that the minimum focusing distance is 5 ft, so if you're buying it for macro work, keep that in mind. If you're looking for a low-cost telephoto lens, this one can't be beat at this price.
