4 out of 5 stars decent, long and affordable lens   August 27, 2008

I didn't have much of a budget w/ which to shop for a long telephoto lens-about $500. I was able to find this lens (APO only; not DG,RF)at a reputable on line photography outlet(used, excellent quality) for that price. Eventually , I spend about $60-$70 more to buy a Tiffen 86mm UV filter(coarse thread!)to protect large, exposed front element (from same outlet) & new hood (directly from Sigma)
My first shots were disappointing but I expected that. I've achieved better results after learning to: shoot from a steady tripod w/ a remote release or even handheld at very fast shutter speed - 1/ 1000 or faster. depending on light, try to stop down (from 6.3 to f /8 or f/11 too.
Then, if willing give up some distance (use 400mm VS. 500mm)this seems to produce a better photo.
I'd like to experience "pro" Nikon glass, but couldn't afford to go there.
Hope this helps....
Pablo
(p.s. check out sigma 170-500mm photo pool on FLICKR; my photos are of humming birds, deer, etc.)

This lense was just what I was hopeing for. I needed the 500mm for my wildlife photography and once stopped down a click or two it was very sharp. There are other lenses that are sharp too but they can't touch this price.

Very happy with my purchase.
